We do really need to stop thinking of a session (in-person or otherwise) as the finish line and instead treat it as a milestone along a more complete learning journey and/or the starter’s block for when the real learning occurs as we try to apply what was discovered during a session. You’ve highlighted some great ways for doing just that.
I tr to remind myself that this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea though. I still encounter a sizable percentage of folks who are indifferent to or resent all of the efforts to engage them pre- and post-conference. They find it to be overwhelming. For them, I think we will be more successful if we can build in some of these “continuing the learning” interventions into the actual conference schedule and individual session design.
Other benefits of post-content creation and curation are (1) It creates a historical record of what happened that can be referenced in the future; and (2) It actually could be an effective marketing tool for future events as it gives a great overview of the substance of the experience.
Jeff – perhaps it is better to look at certain topics as a curriculum to encourage people to continue learning. If it is packaged correctly, is a topic of need and of value, then positioning it as a program might be a better way to gain buy-in. I agree that sometime those of us who live in this space might want to push the limits just a little too much without waiting for comfort level to catch-up. Thanks for your comments as always.
Hello Jessica,
-Your Pecha Kucha presentation was excellent and I was jealous that you were able to do it without notes. You are incredible!
-I love the word curriculum and how it relates to both CEUs and Career Learning.
-I love the idea of content aggregation. I have created blog posts that aggregate content so that I and others have a constant place to go to find all the content that was created by the meeting. I think every conference should have someone building this in to the main website.
Thank you for writing this blog!!!
Cameron
Curriculum resonates with me Jessica and it also might in some cases shift from us thinking about presenters to thinking about faculty. It’s probably due to having started my carer working in higher ed, but I think the notion of a faculty complemented by guest lecturers and others types of presenters could bode very well for a stronger curriculum in some association PF offerings. Of course, some groups already do something in this spirit.
Jessica, you did an awesome job with your presentation. It was a big topic but you were able to deliver well on key pieces. I was impressed with all of the presenters during this session. The format was wonderful for the virtual audience. It held our attention throughout the entire session.
I like the idea of curriculum as well. But it does mean a shift in the way conference organizers plan and assign their sessions. It requires more input from the audience as to what they want to hear. It also means hiring better speakers instead of depending on the “whoever will speak for free” model. When you use this model you end up with a majority of sessions who have either below par speakers or thinly veiled sales pitches.
Thank you Tracy. I really appreciate the feedback.
You are right a curriculum requires much more work and commitment. It’s a shift. I’m working with an association on this and am hoping to get buy-in. It’s always hard to try new things. Especially when a few dollars are involved. Thanks for the great comments. I always am grateful.
